I sat down with a Head College Football Coach who has won a national championship, built a program from scratch, and now runs one of the most respected D2 programs in the country. He told me something that most families never hear. He stops recruiting players faster than you think — and most of the time, it has nothing to do with talent. The First Three Plays of Your Son's Highlight Film Decide Everything

This coach watches highlight film every night. He told me flat out — if the first three to four plays don't catch his attention, he's moving to the next prospect. That's it. He's gone.

He gave me a real example. He signed a receiver last year whose first clip was a 60 to 70 yard go route. Kid ran right past the defensive back and scored. Second clip was a pancake block on a corner. That was enough. Two plays. Offer.

He told me he brought in 44 new freshmen this summer and gave them tasks to complete before they could train. The ones who showed up on time, finished their assignments, and ate all three meals — those are the guys he already knows will be where they're supposed to be on a Tuesday morning when the season gets hard. The ones who were late or procrastinated told him everything he needed to know.

The Parent Mistake That Gets Your Son Quietly Removed From Recruiting

He was direct about this. The overbearing parent at a visit, the parent who controls the conversation in the coach's office, the parent who asks about NIL money before an offer is even on the table — these things hurt your son's chances without you knowing it.

He said it plainly. He left one recruiting meeting and told his coaches it was painful. He did not know if he wanted that player in the building. Not because of anything the player did. Because of how the meeting felt.

I tell families this constantly. A recruiting visit is a job interview. You would not send your son to a job interview and answer every question for him. The coaches want to hear your son talk about his academics, his goals, his family. They want to see how he handles a real conversation. If your son cannot do that, the problem is not the visit — the problem is that nobody practiced with him beforehand.

When D1 Recruiting Actually Ends for the 2027 Class

This is something families get badly wrong. Parents watch the big schools cancel camps in late June and assume camp season is over. It is not. But here is what is actually over for a lot of 2027 players — D1 recruiting.

By the time June ends, most D1 programs are finishing official visits and locking their 2027 class. They have already moved their attention to 2028 and 2029. If your son is a 2027 grad and has not been on a D1 official visit yet, the probability he gets one is very low. That window has closed.

That is not a reason to panic. That is a reason to stop wasting time. Get your son's film evaluated now. Find out exactly where he projects — D2, FCS, NAIA. Then put all of his energy into contacting the right coaches at the right level. I have seen families spend three years emailing schools at the wrong division. That problem is completely solvable if you get an honest evaluation first.

How This Coach Actually Builds His Roster — and Where High School Players Fit

He signed 16 transfer portal players this year. He told me that was 10 fewer than most programs in his conference. He said out loud that they overdid the portal last year and they are course correcting. His stated goal is to recruit high school players who want to develop, come in and compete, and grow inside the program.

His staff recruits regionally first — North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida. Position coaches have boards by area. When a player makes the ranking, that position coach starts building a relationship. The next step is getting the player on campus for a spring visit or summer camp. Official visits happen in December and January. That is the timeline.

If your son fits the D2 profile and is in the Southeast, the window to get on this coach's radar is camp season. He told me they had over 700 athletes at camps this summer.
