How To Make A Football Highlight Video That Gets Offers

How To Make A Football Highlight Video That Gets Offers

February 05, 20253 min read

Are you looking to create a football highlight video that will grab the attention of college coaches and increase your chances of earning a scholarship? You've come to the right place. With my experience in securing a Division One scholarship and assisting 83% of my mentees in receiving offers, I'm here to guide you through a four-step framework to make your highlight video stand out.

Step One: The Info Slide

The first impression is crucial, so you'll want your highlight video to kick off with a professional info slide. This slide should last only five seconds, just enough to catch the coach’s eye before diving into game footage. Here’s what to include: a headshot, your name, class year, high school, height, weight, X handle (social media), GPA, email, and cell phone. If your school uses Huddle, create this slide there; otherwise, Canva is a great alternative found at canva.com.

Step Two: The Hook

Grabbing the coach's attention immediately is key, and that's where the "hook" plays its part. Your first three plays should be your most impressive—think touchdowns, deep throws, big blocks, or game-saving tackles. It’s vital to focus on a single position, ideally the one with the best scholarship potential. We recommend a professional evaluation if you’re unsure which position favors you the most (link in description). Remember, visuals speak louder than words; let your plays do the talking without textual embellishments.

Step Three: The Body

Consistency in performance showcases your skills, making the body of your video essential. Aim for 15 to 20 high-quality plays, focusing on execution rather than quantity. Use visual cues like circles or arrows to guide viewers to your actions without needing to rewind. Here's a quick rundown for different positions:

Quarterbacks: Emphasize long throws, touchdowns, mobility, and off-schedule plays.

Running Backs: Focus on explosive runs, pass-catching capabilities, and effective pass protection.

Offensive Linemen: Highlight your blocking, protection skills, and athleticism.

Tight Ends: Demonstrate versatility in blocking and catching.

Wide Receivers: Showcase touchdown catches and long-yardage plays.

Defensive Backs: Interceptions, pass breakups, and physical run play are key.

Linebackers: Show physicality and aggression at the point of attack, and ability to make plays in space, focusing on defensive aggression.

Defensive Linemen: Display power, disruption, and line-of-scrimmage control.

Kickers: Showcase your longest successful field goals and kickoffs.

If you play multiple positions, start with your best position and flow into others at the end to showcase versatility without confusion.

Step Four: The Close

Your closing should leave a lasting impression and make it easy for coaches to contact you promptly. The info slide from the start should resurface at the end, lingering for 15 to 20 seconds. To cap it all off, lead into this slide with an impressive play that urges coaches to reach out immediately.

To further streamline your video creation, consider using editing tools like CapCut, iMovie for Mac users, or Windows Movie Maker if your school doesn’t provide editing software. Avoid elaborate effects or music that might distract from the plays themselves.

Creating a highlight video can be a game-changer, bridging the gap between you and a coveted college offer. Follow this framework to ensure your talent doesn’t go unnoticed!
